Australia has received 107k of Tesla’s 1 million exports from Giga Shanghai: report
Tesla China recently announced that it has exported a total of 1 million electric vehicles to date. From this number, more than 107,000 electric cars were exported to Australia, as per recent reports.
Citing industry data from carloop, The Driven noted in a report that Australian roads have received over 107,000 Teslas from Giga Shanghai to date. Even more interestingly, Giga Shanghai has produced almost 50% of all the electric passenger cars in Australia. That’s a notable accomplishment, especially since vehicle exports from Giga Shanghai only started in April 2021.
Tesla China celebrated its 1-million-vehicle-export milestone with a commemorative photo and a social media post from VP Grace Tao. As noted by the executive, “In just four years since the first batch of vehicles were exported, Tesla made in China has been exported to many countries and regions such as Europe, Asia Pacific, Australia and New Zealand, and has been highly recognized by overseas markets.”
Tesla has been present in Australia’s automotive market for some time, with the company initially delivering the original Tesla Roadster in 2011. This was followed by the Model S, Model X, and Model 3, all of which were exported from the Fremont Factory in California. Australia’s Model 3 sedans, and later, Model Y crossovers, were later exported from Giga Shanghai as the China-based facility became the company’s primary vehicle export hub.
The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y have been very successful in Australia. The Tesla Model 3 made a notable impact in the country’s EV segment, though in 2023, the Model Y took over its sedan sibling to become Australia’s best-selling electric vehicle with 28,769 sales. This trend seems to be continuing this year, with the Model Y leading the country’s EV charts with 15,199 sales and the reengineered Model 3 following at 12,902 units as of the end of August.
