Nio is developing real-time EV battery testing AI
Nio is developing a real-time electric vehicle (EV) testing AI with Monolith, an artificial intelligence software startup based in the United Kingdom. Nio and Monolith aim to use AI to test and improve EV battery packs in real-time. The AI will enhance Nio’s battery-swapping services in Europe.
According to Monolith CEO Richard Ahlfeld, the UK-based company and Nio are ready to test its AI in five European markets soon. Ahlfeld also shared that Monolith and the Chinese automaker are preparing to submit regulatory requirements to start testing the AI in China.
Nio offers battery-swapping services in five European markets. Nio’s head of battery systems in Europe, Frank Kindermann, stated that 98% of the company’s customers use its battery-swapping services. The Chinese automaker uses Monolith’s AI algorithm to check the health, performance, and durability of batteries swapped out of vehicles and tests new batteries.
“Nio can essentially give you a prototype of a car early on, and they keep testing and learning from what you’re doing,” Ahfeld told Reuters.
Monolith works with 10 top automakers worldwide, including Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Honda. It aims to use machine learning algorithms to improve EV batteries. With its data, the UK-based company wants to help European automakers catch up to China’s car manufacturers.
“These Chinese want to push even faster; they’re currently thinking, ‘Okay, can we do it in one year?’ [European automakers are] obviously behind China, so they need to learn really, really quickly,” said Monolith’s CEO.
