Tesla Cybertruck lead engineer explains Foundation Series order page update
Tesla recently updated its Cybertruck order page, and it resulted in a ton of confusion, especially among the company’s critics. Amidst Tesla’s current focus on pushing sales of the Cybertruck Foundation Series, the all-electric pickup truck’s updated order page dropped the Cybertruck Rear Wheel Drive (RWD). This resulted in numerous claims alleging that Tesla has canceled the most affordable version of the Cybertruck.
This, of course, is very unlikely. The Cybertruck was launched with three variants: a RWD version that starts at $60,990, the Cybertruck AWD that starts at $79,990, and the Cyberbeast that starts at $99,990 before options. Since the Cybertruck AWD and Cyberbeast are the only trims included in Tesla’s Foundation Series run, it was no surprise that only the two variants are currently available on the Cybertruck’s order page today.
In a comment on X, Tesla Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill provided some context behind the all-electric pickup truck’s updated order page. As per the Cybertruck lead engineer, Tesla’s goal is to make it easy for customers to order what is currently available. “Our continued goal is to make it extremely easy to order. It was overly complicated and has been simplified based on what we are producing today,” Morrill wrote in a post on X.

Elon Musk noted during the 2024 Cyber Roundup that Tesla will be ending the Cybertruck’s Foundation Series run soon, and that non-Foundation Series iterations of the all-electric pickup truck would be available starting Q3 2024. These plans soon changed, however, as not long after the 2024 Annual Meeting of Stockholders, Tesla sent messages to customers stating that “due to continued high demand, we expect to deliver only the Foundation Series through late 2024.”
Considering that orders for the Cybertruck Foundation Series are now open to all customers, it does seem like Tesla is currently engaged in its final sales push for the all-electric pickup truck’s limited edition variant. With this in mind, it would not be surprising if non-Foundation Series Cybertrucks do end up becoming available in the fourth quarter of 2024.
