SpaceX will be first to launch Doritos ‘Zero Gravity’ chips safe for space
SpaceX will be the first to have Doritos’ new “Zero Gravity” chips that are designed for space travel on board as it leaves Earth.
Frito Lay announced earlier this week that it would launch a limited-edition Cool Ranch Zero Gravity Flavored Tortilla Chips. The chips are packaged in a cool, space-themed package, but they are catered for travel outside the Earth’s atmosphere with the seasoning and not the tube they come in.
Instead of the powdered topping that comes on the traditional Cool Ranch Doritos, they are covered in an oil-based coating to keep dust from floating around the cabin, according to the New York Post.
They are also designed as a smaller, bite-sized snack instead of the traditional corn chips that we buy in stores.
I thought they were already bite-sized, for what it’s worth.
However, the chips will make it to space on SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn mission on the Dragon spacecraft, which is set to lift off no earlier than August 26. It will be the first-ever commercial spacewalk and will reach an altitude above Earth that hasn’t been done in over 50 years.
Even better than the specially designed chips, they have a great cause behind them. Doritos and the SpaceX Polaris Dawn mission are both partnering with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to encourage fans to get involved.
Tina Mahal, SVP of Marketing at PepsiCo Foods North America, said:
“With every new Doritos innovation, we hope to encourage snackers to pave new paths. The Cool Ranch Zero Gravity chips embrace what it means to live life boldly by pioneering a creative way to raise awareness for such an important cause.”
Doritos is donating $500,000 to St. Jude for the partnership.
Richard C. Shadyac Jr., president and CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, commented on the collaboration:
“We are deeply grateful to Doritos for its generous support that inspires communities and consumers everywhere to unite for a bold cause: helping treat and defeat childhood cancer. Through this partnership, Doritos and the Polaris Dawn crew are being catalysts for change by helping St. Jude raise survival rates for more of the 400,000 kids around the world with cancer every year.”
