BMW overtakes Tesla in Europe, but only for one month

BMW overtook Tesla in electric vehicle sales in Europe for the first time, but only for a single month, according to data.

Tesla has been the leading EV maker in Europe for several years, but for the first time, domestic company BMW sold about 300 units more than its American rival in its home market.

Data from JATO Dynamics, a market research firm, confirmed that BMW sold 14,869 total EVs in the European market last month, outpacing Tesla for the first time.

It is a big win for BMW, proving to itself and its competitors that it can hang with the best. However, there are some important things to note, including the fact that Tesla still leads BMW handily in terms of overall EV sales for the year in the market.

According to EU EVs, a website that tracks EV sales statistics across the European Union, Tesla still has an advantage that spans over 6,000 units, accounting for three percent of the market share.

The site says Tesla has sold 26,980 vehicles in the EU this year, while BMW is second with 20,895 units sold. Tesla holds 13.2 percent of the market, while BMW has 10.2 percent.

From a model standpoint, the Model Y is still the best-selling vehicle in Europe, as it was sold 17,057 times in July. The Model 3 was second with 9,732 sales. BMW’s i4 is fourth, behind the Audi Q4 e-Tron.

The strong month for BMW was helped by a 35 percent sales jump when compared to the same time a year earlier, which JATO Dynamics recognized. Meanwhile, Tesla sales slumped 16 percent when compared the July 2023.
