XPeng teases humanoid robot, set to be unveiled this year
Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker XPeng Motors has teased its plans for an upcoming humanoid robot, which the company is expected to unveil at an event later this year.
On Tuesday, XPeng CEO He Xiaopeng teased the humanoid robot during a meeting in Beijing, announcing that the company plans to launch the project at its upcoming Tech Day on October 24. While the CEO didn’t disclose many details about the robot, the company did share a silhouetted image rendering of the product, as shared on X on Tuesday by user AfonsoEV_.
It’s not clear at this time when XPeng expects to begin production of its own humanoid robot, though it likely won’t be for another year or two, if not longer.
The news is just the latest of XPeng following suit with Tesla, after the U.S. automaker settled in 2021 with a former engineer who was accused of stealing Autopilot source code before going on to work at XMotors, the U.S. arm of XPeng. The Chinese automaker has also said in the past that it pays close attention to Tesla’s products, and many have highlighted similarities in some of the EV maker’s recently debuted products.
Tesla initially unveiled plans for its Optimus humanoid robot at AI Day in 2021, with the company following up with a prototype in 2022. More recently, Tesla has shared a number of updates on the latest-generation of pre-production Optimus robots, including the fact that the company has a few performing simple tasks in its factories.
The company is aiming to begin production of Optimus next year for mostly internal use, before reaching higher production volumes and external deliveries in 2026. Tesla also says it may rent out Optimus units prior to selling them, and it has recently been hiring for a number of new roles related to the product’s development.
