Volvo follows others in tempering EV commitments as it scraps 100% electric goal
Volvo followed other automakers in tempering its commitment to go fully electric by 2030 as it completely ditched the goal on Wednesday.
Instead of committing to all-electric vehicles and selling only those powertrains by 2030, Volvo is now expecting to offer hybrid models as well, a move that Ford also made in August.
Volvo is far from the only company to do this, as Ford also tempered its plans to fully commit to EVs as consumer sentiment still seems to lean toward hybrids and not EVs. Volvo now aims for 90 to 100 percent of its sales to be either EVs or plug-in hybrid models.
Up to 10 percent would be “mild hybrid” models if the automaker sees fit.
The reason for Volvo specifically doing this likely comes from other carmakers’ commitments to scale back as well.
Consumers have catalyzed a growing demand for hybrids, and although EV market share has continued to grow, pure EV companies have performed incredibly well and have outpaced the development of legacy automaker EVs.
Additionally, in Europe, Volvo is bracing for the impact of European tariffs on EVs made in China, which will likely make things more difficult. It has already caused the company to shift production plans.
Volvo is majority owned by Geely, a China-based company. Volvo Cars said it was “responding to changing market conditions and customer demands,” according to Reuters.
CEO Jim Rowan said that adjustments to its strategy are expected and will need to be made:
“We are resolute in our belief that our future is electric. However, it is clear that the transition to electrification will not be linear, and customers and markets are moving at different speeds.”
Automakers need to produce more competitive models to secure more EV stability in terms of future planning so competition is more robust.
Tesla has dominated the U.S. market, and although Rivian, Lucid, and others have gained some ground, the Elon Musk-led EV maker is still at the helm.
