Waymo is now giving over 100,000 paid self-driving rides per week
Waymo has surpassed a new milestone with its paid driverless ride-sharing, as highlighted by one company executive this week.
On Tuesday, Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana shared a post on X celebrating the company as it surpasses 100,000 paid self-driving rides per week. The news follows the company’s unveiling of its next-generation ride-hailing vehicle platform, as well as additional expansions to Waymo One service launched earlier this month.
“We’re building a safer future one ride at a time, and I’m thrilled to share that we’ve just surpassed 100k paid trips per week,” wrote Mawakana. “Congratulations to the entire Waymo team on this incredible milestone, and thank you to our riders who make this journey possible.”
On Monday, Waymo also unveiled its sixth-generation vehicle platform, dubbed Driver, and based in a Zeekr SUV set to carry more passengers than the current Jaguar I-Pace units being used for ride-sharing.
Just a few weeks ago, Waymo was also approved to launch more service area expansions in California, both around the San Francisco Bay Area and to additional areas of Los Angeles County. This comes as the third expansion for Waymo this year alone, as it first launched service in Los Angeles in March, and went on to expand to several new Bay Area cities in May, before launching the most recent expansion in both regions.
In June, Waymo was also granted permission to drop its waitlist in the Bay Area, meaning that riders no longer need to sign up for the list to use the service, but rather just need to download the Waymo One app. A waitlist is still in place for operations in Los Angeles.
Despite gaining approvals to expand throughout much of the year, Waymo is also facing some pushback from California organizations and communities, and it’s under scrutiny from regulators amidst broader skepticism of driverless ride-hailing.
