Tesla Semi seen testing Full-Self Driving near Giga Nevada

A Tesla Semi was spotted undergoing some testing near the company’s Gigafactory Nevada this week, causing many online to ask whether the vehicle could be testing Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD).

On Saturday, drone operator and Giga Nevada observer Zanegler shared footage and images of the Tesla Semi with data-collection devices seemingly related to FSD tests. While Tesla’s electric semi-trucks feature hardware capable of using Autopilot and FSD, the system is still being configured for the Semi, and these tests could well be part of that development.

Some users in the thread said the hardware could also include LiDAR, likely to test the system against Tesla’s camera-based “Vision,” on which Autopilot and FSD Supervised are based.

Another Tesla Semi with a seeming LiDAR and data collection rig was spotted in June, sparking similar speculation.

The recent sighting comes just after the first Tesla Semi in Europe was seen on Friday, as spotted near Kamen, Germany, seemingly on its way to Hannover. The electric Class 8 truck is expected to appear at the upcoming IAA Transportation 2024 conference, though Tesla has also launched a few job listings for the Semi in Europe.

U.S. Business Development Head Graham Carroll detailed Tesla’s plans to bring the Semi to Europe earlier this month, alongside the announcement of the new roles.

“We are taking steps to bring the Tesla Semi to Europe, and I’m looking for someone with industry experience in electrification to help us develop this exciting new market,” Graham said. “This is a groundbreaking product that meaningfully advances Tesla’s mission, and the team behind it is world-class. Let the wild rumpus begin.”

Elon Musk has also suggested that Tesla could produce the Semi at its Gigafactory outside of Berlin, Germany, though he didn’t detail any specific plans for the company to do so at this point.

“I think it makes sense to produce the Semi truck in Europe at Giga Berlin,” Musk said in February.

While Tesla continues to garner clients for its Semi program, the company is also working on expanding Giga Nevada to build a dedicated Semi production facility, along with other projects that the expansion will accommodate.
