FCC says ‘our economy doesn’t benefit from monopolies’ in dig at SpaceX Starlink

FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel said the U.S. economy “doesn’t benefit from monopolies” in a dig at SpaceX’s Starlink.

At a conference on Wednesday, Rosenworcel encouraged more space companies to try and develop their own satellite internet products in hopes that it would bring some kind of competition to SpaceX and Starlink.

She said (via Reuters):

“[Starlink has] almost two-thirds of the satellites that are in space right now and has a very high portion of internet traffic… Our economy doesn’t benefit from monopolies. So we’ve got to invite many more space actors in, many more companies that can develop constellations and innovations in space.”

Starlink has routinely launched more satellites into the atmosphere with every passing week, hoping to provide more internet access to the Earth and many of its remote areas.

Rosenworcel said that because competition in the communications sector is so strong, “space should be no exception.”

The FCC is taking steps to bring more competition, as well. The agency has been reaching out to potential entrants to help them understand how license applications work, hoping it will encourage more companies to bring new products to market that will challenge Starlink.

SpaceX has no plans to slow down its rollout of Starlink and its production of kits. The plant where it builds the terminals reached an annual capacity of 4.6 million units.

The next SpaceX Starlink launch will take place tomorrow, September 12, from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, as the Mission 9-6 launch window will open at 7:45 p.m. PDT.
