EV sales down by nearly 44% in Europe

Electric vehicles sales were down by 43.9% in Europe’s in August 2024. 

The European Union’s overall new car sales fell 18.3% last month. For major car markets in Europe, like Germany, France, and Italy, the EV sales saw double-digit losses. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), Germany reported a 68.8% drop in EV sales while France recorded a 33.1% decline. 

Plug-in electric cars also dropped by 22.3% across all 27 members states of the EU. Meanwhile Hybrid electric vehicles sales performed better, rising 6.6% in August. ACEA data revealed that hybrid electric cars now have a market share of 31.3% in Europe. 

According to Reuters, hybrid electric vehicles are a good compromise between internal combustion engine (ICE) cars and pure EVS. Hybrids are considered cleaner than ICE cars and cheaper than all-electric vehicles. 

EU member states was supposed to vote on the European Commission’s tariffs on China-made electric vehicles on September 25, 2024. The vote would decide whether or not the EU will sustain the new tariffs over the next five years.

As per Politico, the September 25 vote might not push through. According to three EU diplomats, the vote has been taken off the agenda meeting of the bloc’s Trade Defense Instruments Committee.
