Redwood Materials strikes deal with BMW

Redwood Materials recently announced its partnership with BMW of North America to recycle lithium-ion batteries. 

As per the deal, Redwood Materials will recycle lithium-ion batteries from BMW electric vehicles (EVs), including cars under the BMW, MINI, Rolls Royce, and BMW Motorrad brands. Redwood plans to directly work with BMW Group’s network of 700 locations, including dealerships, distribution centers, and internal facilities, to recover end-of-life lithium-ion batteries.

“Our relationship with BMW of North America embodies our continued commitment to recovering end-of-life EV battery packs to ensure valuable materials are recycled, refined, and returned to the battery supply chain to build increasingly sustainable electric vehicles,” stated Redwood Materials. 

Redwood is currently expanding its network in the United States. It aims to help localize battery production in North America by providing the necessary materials to produce cells. 

The battery recycling company already has one operating campus near Reno, Nevada. The company is building another campus in Charleston, South Carolina. 

“We’re building a huge (Airbus A380 for scale) cathode plant with more than 1 million EVs/year of capacity at our Nevada Campus. We’re reducing both the construction cost and the build time through ambitious and detailed engineering, focusing on innovative practices in the plant’s very design and development,” announced Redwood Materials earlier this year.
