BYD Shark heading to Australia in October

The BYD Shark plug-in hybrid pickup truck is heading to Australia in October, ahead of its competitors from Ford and Great Wall Motor (GWM). 

The 2025 BYD Shark in Australia will follow a similar name as its sibling, the Sealion 6 in Australia. BYD’s plug-in hybrid pickup truck will be called the Shark 6 Down Under. 

The Chinese automaker will start taking orders for the 2025 BYD Shark 6 on October 29, 2024. The Shark 6 will be available to order a year before its rivals the Ford Ranger PHEV and the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV. 

According to Drive, a leak in the government database suggested that the BYD Shark 6’s starting price will be AUD$68,000 plus on-road costs. The Shark 6 is priced is similar to the Ford ranger and Toyota HiLux. 

BYD’s timing for the start of Shark 6 order may be strategic. The Chinese automaker is expected to start deliveries of the Shark 6 within a few weeks or month after October, but before Australia’s Fringe Benefits Tax exemptions for new plug-in hybrid vehicles end. 

In May, the BYD Shark plug-in hybrid launched in Mexico. The China-based car maker plans to expand the Shark sales to Australia and North America.
